Retro Fashion in Thunder Bay

1950s pin-up style hits Thunder Bay, with a fresh, modern twist on retro fashions at Hey Sailor

Hey Sailor offers you a time warp with a twist. Ensconced in 1950s styles, with post 1990s detailing, this shop offers pinup rockabilly retro-styled dresses, petticoats, blouses, shoes, crinolines, bathing suits, other add-ons, and a cruelty-free, vegetarian makeup line from Balm Cosmetics – all available for our contemporary Betty Pages and Marilyn Monroes.

If you’re looking to glam onto that Crybaby vibe, you will be thrilled with the black dresses sporting skull and spider patterns. You might prefer the dress that employs, as decoration, Seymour, the voracious man-eating Venus flytrap from Little Shop of Horrors, where Seymour’s bloody red lips complement the green. Clever!

Before opening the shop in the fall of 2016, owners, Jessica McNabb and Jenny Costanzo were ordering these kinds of items for years. They felt their passion for the retro could and should be shared. On the mark, they’ve got a big fan base of women and drag queens alike. The shop’s uniqueness has brought in many fans from the United States. Men see the potential for unique gifts. They purchase gift certificates, purses and stockings for their significant other, likely sharing in the retro fantasy. Jessica and Jenny are looking to carry men’s clothing in the future. And, by the way, all products are ethically sourced.

Speaking of Thunder Bay’s growing retail district in the North Core, Jessica states, “It’s really coming to life. We love the area and the city is putting a lot into developing the area and, of course, foot traffic grows when the weather warms up.”
